National Program for the Prevention of Breast Cancer

The State honors the memory of Fofi Gennimata in the way she herself would have wished: through a dedicated program for the Prevention of Breast Cancer that bears her name, accompanied by the message that the fight for a better public healthcare system must always unite us.

For the first time, the State does not wait for citizens to visit their doctor only after symptoms appear; instead, it proactively reaches out to remind them to take care of themselves, while also creating the appropriate framework that enables them to do so without inconvenience or cost.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the European Union and the leading cause of cancerrelated death among women. Digital mammography is an imaging examination used for breast cancer prevention. It employs lowenergy, lowdose Xrays to examine breast tissue and fat and detect potential abnormalities. The results and images produced from the examination are then evaluated by specialized physicians. Digital mammography is the primary examination for the timely and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. Through this method, cancerous tumors can be detected at an early stage—tumors that, through palpation alone, might only be noticed approximately two years later.

The program is addressed to all women aged 45 to 74 who reside in Greece and hold an AMKA number, regardless of whether they are insured or uninsured. It incorporates digital technology to make it easier for women to undergo their examinations quickly, easily, and free of charge. The free examinations included in the Program are:

• Digital Mammography for all eligible women
• Ultrasound (in case of a finding or need for further investigation)
• Clinical examination (in case of a finding)
