National Program for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer

National Program for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer

With the National Program for Colorectal Cancer Screening, the aim is the timely detection of precancerous lesions—or even the disease itself—in order to ensure immediate intervention and treatment. If adenomatous polyps or potential neoplasia are diagnosed and managed at an early stage, they are 100% curable, making early detection particularly critical.

The risk of colorectal cancer can be assessed through a selftest, and in the case of a positive result, a colonoscopy can be performed to promptly identify adenomatous polyps or possible neoplasia.

The screening program is addressed to all citizens aged 50–69 years who:

  • have not already been diagnosed with adenomatous polyps of the colon,
  • have not been diagnosed with colorectal cancer,
  • have not been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease,
  • have not been diagnosed with Lynch syndrome,
  • have not been diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis,
  • have not been diagnosed with hereditary colorectal cancer,
  • possess an AMKA number (regardless of whether they are insured or uninsured).

Eligible beneficiaries are entitled to the following free of charge:

  • Acquisition and performance of the SelfTest (SelfDiagnostic Examination).
  • In the event of a positive SelfTest result, a consultation with a Gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation.
  • Following the Gastroenterologist’s approval, provision of a laxative preparation and performance of a diagnostic colonoscopy.
  • Removal of findings, when feasible, during the procedure, along with biopsy sampling.
  • Histopathological examination (Biopsy).

Beneficiaries who have activated paperless prescribing will gradually receive their electronic referral for free preventive examinations.

Those who have not activated paperless prescribing may use their AMKA to contact any collaborating center in their area (public or private) and schedule their appointment for the respective examination of the program, without any financial cost.
